An Empire of Wealth by John Steele Gordon is an overview of the American economy starting with the settlement of North America, continuing through westward expansion and the railroad barons and continuing through modern times. In my opinion, this book glosses over post World War II America, but other than that, it is a good business read. I especially liked reading about J. P. Morgan and all he did for this country. J. P. Morgan basically acted as the Federal Reserve before there was a Federal Reserve . There is also one terrific quote about Morgan , “God made the world in 4004 B.C. and it was reorganized in 1901 by J. P. Morgan .” Don’t get me wrong, J.P. Morgan made plenty of money doing his good deeds, but he was an integral part of the late 1800s and early 1900s financial system.
