The Ashes series by William W. Johnstone takes place in the post World War III United States. General Ben Raines is a reluctant hero/general/mercenary/sometimes President of parts of the remaining United States. General Raines and his band of rebels take on gangs, punks, Russians, Nazis, and other miscreants as they try to remake a more conservative, individually responsible United States. One of the big things that General Raines is a proponent of is taking personal responsibility.
