The Brotherhood of War Series by W.E.B. Griffin takes a set of characters from shavetail Lieutenants in World War II through their progression in the United States Army. It takes in the good, the bad, the loves, the loss and everything else that goes along with life and the military. These books are very good, classic military fiction and entertaining. Like many series, these are best to read in order, but as you can imagine, I did not follow my own advice.
