All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque was the first World War I book that I read. Paul Baumer is a German soldier on the Western Front during the trench warfare stalemate. Paul deals with combat and losing friends to both death and injury. Like many of these war books, it is clear that soldiers that are left in horrible conditions eventually become indifferent to death and hope for an injury that will take them out of the fight, but will not permanently incapacitate them. This is a good book from the German foot soldier’s perspective.
