The Bloody Ground is the fourth volume in the Starbuck Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell. I love Cornwell books especially his Sharpe Series and the Starbuck Chronicles . In this book Nathaniel Starbuck, the Northerner fighting for the South, takes command of a punishment battalion. A punishment battalion is a group of criminals or deserters that are reformed into a new battalion. They are always looked down upon and no one wants their support in a battle. The battalion has to prove themselves at the battle of Antietam .
