Manarola is the second village in Cinque Terre. It is not far from Riomaggiore by trail. It felt a bit smaller than Riomaggiore in size, but I’m actually not sure on the population. There were some great restaurants right by the water and we ate there on a covered deck. The seafood was great and the local wine was also great. The local wines are mostly whites so we switched from reds to whites during our visit to Cinque Terre.
The cool thing about the wines are that the vineyards are right there along the trails between the cities. The vines grow up the very steep hills. The trail from Manarola to Corniglia starts more of the primitive portion of the trail; however, the first piece is still very easy. As you go through Manarola, the trail is still paved, but after about half a mile it moves to more natural footing. This in my opinion is the real start of the Cinque Terre trails. The distance between Manarola and Corniglia seemed to be about 2.5 to 3 miles.
