A leased Boeing 727 goes missing in Africa and it is believed to be hijacked. The United States intelligence agencies cannot agree on what happened to the plane. With the help of a Russian arms trader (with ties to the CIA), Charley Castillo, the assistant to the Secretary of Homeland Security, uses resources that are outside the box to track the plane. This book had some great comedic interplay between the characters. It is especially amusing when Charley, who is also a Major, “suggests” generals take certain actions. Is he a Major giving orders to Generals? Is he acting on behalf of the Secretary of Homeland Security or even the President?

Griffin . In this book we are introduced to the characters that take us through the series. The series starts in 1943 in Africa in a tank brigade. One of the things I love about the characters in this book is that they do what needs to be done and regulations be damned. They push the envelope of military right and wrong and chain of command. That is not typically the way the military works, but these guys get the job done without regard to whether it will cost them a promotion down the road. This is a good book.

Griffin . The thing about this series that I enjoy is that when I’m done with one book, I am immediately ready for the next one. This book has two Operation of Strategic Services (OSS) missions in each World War II theater. For those that do not know, the OSS was the precursor to the CIA . The other thing I did not realize was the amount of resistance put up by Americans soldiers in the Philippines after Douglas MacArthur left and American forces were supposed to have surrendered. A self appointed general, Wendell Fertig led up to 30,000 joint American and Philippine soldiers in resisting the Japanese. If you like World War II fiction, this is a great book. Read the series in order if you can though.
